In October 2002, we spent a few days in Athens as part of our tour to Turkey and Greece. Although Athens does not feel as old as Istanbul, it has perhaps more ancient ruins.

At the entrance to the Acropolis, this old soldier wore a historic uniform. This is the only site where we saw the old fashioned uniforms in use. |
This huge structure is a rather complete Roman theater built at the base of the Acropolis. There is a Greek theater close by which is not in such good repair. |
At last, here we are in front of the Parthenon! |
Hidden from view at the crest of the Acropolis is a small but magnificent museum of antiquities. A near-life sized horse shows the incredible skills of the sculptors. |
From the Acropolis, it is possible to see the remains of the Temple of Zeus. |
This is a detail of the Temple of Zeus in Athens. This fallen column is so fractured in comparison to its few brethren who still stand tall. |
This is the remains of the Roman Agora at the foot of the Acropolis. In the background is the Tower of the Winds. |
At the edge of the Plaka in Athens is a delightful and permanent flea market selling most everything, including books and shoes. |
This little boy is trying to figure out just how the puppet works. He knows the puppet must be a man but why is he so short? |
Why is this young lady sitting all alone in a crowd of friends? And why is there a young lady wearing an evening gown during the middle of the day? |
This gentleman was very busy selling coffee in the most crowded area of the Plaka. |
These little gypsy children and talking with a girl whose attitude appears to overflow! |
This gypsy couple sat with a baby in the midst of piles of what appeared to be junk. Perhaps they were sorting through it all looking for something to sell. |
